As Term 4 draws to a close, we can look back and celebrate the memorable and exciting 2023 Camp Week. Year 7 spent the week at Kookaburra camp, working together to achieve a common cause. Year 8 enjoyed the majesty of Harrietville. Year 9 walked the sights of Melbourne in their urban adventure. Year 10 swung through the trees of Emerald, Year 11 caught a wave or two on the coast of Anglesea. Year 12 had the opportunity to put themselves to the test with a week of flexible learning.
Ms Steer and I were lucky enough to drop in on a few of the camps and we were blown away by the passion, enthusiasm and grit on display from our students. It is such a wonderful way to finish a term; I am sure our Senior School students will be sleeping well after such an adventurous week.
A week like this is not possible without the support and dedication of our staff. Our stage coordinators, Mr Roger Barrows, Ms Jane Mackinlay and Ms Mel Davies have been instrumental in the design, organisation and implementation of these camps. Mr Tim Kennedy (Year 10), Mr Matthew Patching (Year 10) and Mr Rob Cowan (Year 12) have been wonderful and stepped into the roles of camp leaders while away. I would like to thank all of the staff who have generously given up their time in order to give our students these transformative opportunities; we are blessed here at Scots to have such generous and dedicated staff.
Last week the Senior School came together to learn about the significance of ANZAC Day. On Friday afternoon, Ms Paula Gleeson and our 2/23rd Battalion Ambassador, Imogen Ziebarth, led the educational assembly with empathy and compassion. They shared stories of sacrifice and loss during WWI. I encourage all of the community to look at the display currently around the school, it is a moving display that highlights the tragedy and loss experienced at war. This recognition will continue on ANZAC day; I look forward to seeing our students in their full winter uniform at the Albury march on the morning of Monday 25 April.
In the meantime, I wish all in our community a safe and rejuvenating Easter break.
ANZAC Day • 25 April
The Scots School Albury has a long tradition of marching in the Albury ANZAC Day Parade along Dean Street.
Our affiliation with the 2/23rd Battalion also means that we feel a great connectedness to honouring the fallen on this day and commemorating their service. We had extensive student and staff participation in the parade last year, and 2023 sees us once again in a position to honour the service of former students and staff, as well as to reflect upon our own familial connections to military service.
Our Year 9 students will be marching behind the 2/23rd banner again this year.
Students from K-12 will be marching behind our Pipe Band and we ask that they assemble in year-level order to the side of ‘As Thick as Thieves’ Café in Macauley Street at 8.30am so we can be ready to move into position by 9.00am when the March commences. Scots staff will be there to assist with assembling students and will march with their classes and Learning Mentor groups.
We are excited to release tickets to our 2023 Showcase Production – Shrek the Musical. Come along to see our talented students perform in one of three fun-filled shows:

Call for Volunteers • Wednesday Community Matinee
The community matinee is a tradition at Scots for the annual Showcase Musical - bringing together local senior citizens and school groups and enabling our student cast to showcase their hard work. The Community Matinee is on Wednesday 10 May and assistance is required from 9.00am-12.00pm.
Roles on the day include: parking attendants, assistants to walk and seat senior citizens, giving directions to groups as they arrive and depart, setting up morning tea and delivering refreshments to senior citizens.
If you do come along to assist, you are more than welcome to stay and watch the show at no charge.
The Scots School Albury Highland Fair and Pipe Band competition has been moved to 14 September 2024 and we are searching for motivated and creative people to help us deliver the Best. Highland Fair. Ever!
The Highland Fair was set to be held in March this year, but as soon as the Pipe Band's tour to Scotland in July was confirmed, plans for a much bigger and more spectacular event were hatched. We needed a longer lead time to put all the plans into motion.
Help us create that plan and work towards delivering a fantastic Highland Fair experience.
Volunteers interesting in joining the organising committee should register an expression of interest by emailing marketing@scotsalbury.nsw.edu.au and we will be in touch to organise our first committee meeting.
We look forward to hearing from you!
From the Library • Alley McKeon
The Chess Club has been hugely successful this term after finding its home in “The Chess Room”. This room has been a hive of activity at recess and lunch led by our chess aficionados, Oliver Baitch and Billy Stewart. Oliver and Billy have created quite a buzz around chess this year.
The chess team played its round 1 match of the Riverina Inter-Schools competition against Xavier High School last week and came away with the win. The team of Oliver Baitch, Billy Stewart, Josh O’Brien and Josh Niuila all played very well.
Oliver and Josh O'Brien both won their matches. Billy had a close contest against his opponent, fending off many “checks”. Josh Niuila possibly played the hardest match as he duked it out for more than 25 minutes before eventually going down. With the score at 2-2, we won on a count-back from Josh O’Brien’s match. This is a testament to Josh’s improvement over the last year.
Congratulations to the whole team on a great effort. We now take on Border Christian College in Round 2 early next term.
Junior School Chess also starts next term with their tournament day on Tuesday 2 May.
In other library news, the junior school classes have been reading stories and doing activities relating to Easter. It’s exciting to think about the Easter Bunny coming this weekend!
The senior school students have been busy finishing off assessments (doing lots of printing) and getting ready for exams.
Happy Easter! Have an enjoyable break and I hope that everyone manages to read a book or two while eating their Easter eggs.
Sibling enrolments for 2024 - due now
Scots has concluded Term 1, 2023, with a Boarding House almost filled to the brim and student waitlists in many year levels.
We are in a wonderfully healthy situation and we are busily planning our next steps because it is equally important for us to consolidate at the same time as embrace continued growth.
As places become limited in certain year levels, it would be wise for existing families to submit enrolments early for siblings. It helps us to accurately plan, but it also ensures you lock in your place.
Siblings, along with children of alumni, are offered preferential enrolment but if a class is already full, there is potential for disappointment.
Contact our Enrolments Officer, Emily Britt, by emailing enrolments@scotsalbury.nsw.edu.au for further information.
Sport
Congratulations on the following sporting successes from our many talented students:
Tri-State Waterpolo Championships
Congratulations to Sammy Walch (Year 10) and Ella Brooks (Year 10) who won gold at the Tri-State Waterpolo Championships in Geelong on 18 and 19 February. The Albury Sharks Under 16 Girls competed against eight other teams in their division and the competition was fierce and highly skilled. In local competition recently, the girls were part of the Sharks team which won the grand final of women's C Grade competition, beating Albury Tigers. And, at the Sharks presentation night, Sammy won Most Improved for Under 16s and Ella won Best and Fairest Runner-Up for Under 16s.
CIS Swimming
Congratulations to our Junior School swimmers who competed at the CIS NSW competition (representing RAS) at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre recently. It was great for them to experience the atmosphere of State level competition. See the photos below of our swimmers enjoying the experience. Kudos to Darcy Baird, Lilly Baird, Alby Clark, Millie Glover, Charlotte Hill, Iris Johanson, Ardan Magaharan, Duke Maloney, Sofie Mensinga, Gracie Ross, Scarlett Skidmore and Abigail Waller.
CIS Football
Congratulations to Sam McDonald (Year 6) who made the CIS team for AFL. Sam (pictured below) travelled to Sydney on Monday 3 April and trialled against 90 other highly skilled students - a massive effort! Good luck in Batemans Bay in May, Sam!
ACT Brumbies Selection
Congratulations to Madeleine Hill (Year 9) and Edwina Harrington (Year 8) who have been selected in the Under 14s ACT Brumbies Country Rugby Union team. The girls will play at the NSW Rugby State Championship in Dubbo and the Southern States Rugby Championship in Canberra.
Head of School Girl Rowing
Congratulations to Sommers Hogan (Year 10) and Anastasia McFarlane (Year 10) who won the Year 10 double scull gold medal in the A final of the The Head of School Girls rowing in Geelong recently. Sienna McFarlane (Year 9) finished second in the B final of the Year 9 single scull, as well.
Netball
Congratulations to Mim Dunstan (Year 12) who competed for the Hume Netball Association (Brock-Burrum) in Division 1 of the Riverina Zone at the Regional League carnival last weekend. The team came up against representative sides from Wagga and Barellan across Saturday and Sunday in a valuable learning experience.
Scots browbands and saddlecloths are part of the Scots Equestrian Team uniform. These will be loaned to riders who don’t already have one for the Interschools event. Soft Shell Jackets and Riding Polos also form part of the Equestrian Team Uniform but are optional.
The polos and jackets are navy with white trim, embroidered Scots logo on the left breast and white embroidery on the back which will read: SCOTS EQUESTRIAN similar to the photo.
On Day 1 of the Scots event, you must wear your school shirt, tie, and jumper and this can also be worn on Day 2. However on Day 2, if you prefer, you can wear the riding polo for show jumping, novelties and handymount. Riders in the Lead Line classes will need to be in school shirt, tie, and jumper for the Mount & Rider class and may stay in that, or change to a polo, for the handymount.
If you haven't joined the team and would like to, please email Rowena at rnewcomen@scotsalbury.nsw.edu.au
Hockey • Doug Agar
Well done to our U16s, U14s, and U12s Hockey Teams who have had a positive start to the season, especially our U16s Girls who have won two out of two so far.
A special welcome to those players who have made their debut for Scots, or even played their first ever game of hockey in the first two rounds. Please note that we will not train or play during the Easter Holidays.
Following on from the Thursday Skills Sessions, there will be a half-day program on Monday 17 April for all Junior School-aged players at the Albury Hockey Centre. Cost will be $40 with food and equipment provided. This will need to be booked through hawparticipation@hocketact.org.au.
Harmony Week donation
Prefects Lylah Ellao (Year 12) and Mackenzie Semmens (Year 12) presented more than $400 raised during Harmony Week to Richard Ogetii, Community Executive office of the Albury-Wodonga Ethnic Communities Council, at Senior School Assembly last week.
There were lots of activities across the school for the special week of Harmony activities: an International Market featured food from around the world, students wore a touch of orange to celebrate Harmony Day and Junior School students wore their most interesting socks to start a conversation for World Down Syndrome Day.
Led by prefects, Lylah & Mackenzie, the International Market at lunchtime showcased traditional food from across the world supplied by students and their families.
Harmony Week (20-26 March) was about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone; and World Down Syndrome Day (March 21) was a global awareness day.
Pipe Band wins Victorian Championship
The Pipe Band has made several successful trips to Melbourne to compete in Pipe Band competitions over the past couple of weeks.
The band was crowned Champion Band in their grade and also collected the prize for Champion Drum Corps two weekends ago at the Melbourne Highland Games held at Eastfield Park, Croydon. The band also was runner-up in the Juvenile B Selection for the Marches event and placed third in the Juvenile B Medley event.
It’s a particularly impressive result as it was the first time the full band had competed together since way back in 2018!
Then at last weekend's Victorian Pipe Band Championships at Haileybury College, the band was crowned Victorian Champion. It was awarded first place in the Grade 4B competition and also won Best Drum Corps in both the 4B and Novice B March and finished second overall in the Novice B Competition.
A huge achievement for our dedicated band members and a special thanks to our alumni and guest players. This is the first Victorian Championship that Scots has won and it was incredibly special to have several former students share in the victory.
A big thanks to Ms Ross and Mr Patching for their incredible support throughout the day and to our bus skipper, Mr Sutcliffe.
